Illinois has many Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) and each one has waitlists for subsidized housing options. Not all waitlists are open, so finding out what you can sign up for and how is a helpful place to start.
To find your PHA, click here, select your county, and then scroll down to the Public Housing Authority section.
Many Public Housing Authorities use two different types of vouchers to provide housing options for families:
Project Based Vouchers are rental subsidies placed into buildings and specific homes to subsidize the rent of those places. These vouchers are location specific, so if you move you cannot take the voucher to the next place you will live.
Housing Choice Vouchers are tenant rental subsidies that households can apply to any home that can pass the PHA inspection of the home.
Public Housing includes subsidized housing buildings that can be for everyone with a low income or only for seniors with a low income.
