Applying for housing can be stressful and can be met with rejection. If that happens, this is not the end of the story.
Typically, management companies use a software system to review applications while a person reviews an appeal, putting a human connection into the process. Submitting an appeal is worth the time, as it can turn a denial into a lease.
Steps Following a Rejection
Ask the Property Manager to share their appeal process with you
Often this looks like writing a letter within 10 or 14 days (the sooner the better!) to share why they should reverse their decision to deny your housing application.
Appeal the rejection within the outlined timeframe
Follow the steps outlined by the appeal process
Write a letter that addresses the reason you were denied and reasons to consider offering housing to you based on what has changed since that denial reason.
As an example, I was evicted when the rent was raised above my paycheck and am applying for this housing because the rent is well within my budget. I have supports to help me with my budget and can assure you that I am able to pay my rent on time every time.
If you want, include a letter from a health professional, social worker, or person who knows you and can advocate for you. Testimonies show you have a community on your side, there to help you succeed.
Follow up if you do not hear back within a week on the status of your appeal
It never hurts to all or send a friendly email to ask if they have come to a decision on your appeal, as you are hopeful that they will consider you for their available home.
